The establishment of the first Indian cotton mill, “The Bombay Spinning Mill”, marked a significant turning point in the country’s industrial history. Found on this day in 1854 in Bombay by Cowasji Nanabhai Davar, the mill was set up in order to address the unfavorable balance of trade with England.

During that time, India was exporting raw cotton to England, while simultaneously importing textiles from the Lancashire mills at an escalating cost. The continuous import of textiles from England was causing a strain on the country’s economy. Realizing the need to change this situation, Nanabhai Davar took the wise decision to start the first Indian cotton mill.

The mill had an initial investment of ₹5 Lakh, which was a significant amount during that period. What made this mill unique was the fact that it was steam-powered. This was a breakthrough in Indian textile manufacturing as it allowed for increased production and efficiency.

Prior to the establishment of The Bombay Spinning Mill, there had been an unsuccessful attempt to set up a cotton cloth mill in 1818 at Fort Gloaster near Kolkata. However, this earlier mill had failed to achieve the desired success.

The success of The Bombay Spinning Mill paved the way for the growth of the cotton industry in India. It served as an inspiration for other entrepreneurs to venture into textile manufacturing and contributed to the overall development of the Indian economy. The mill not only created job opportunities for many but also helped reduce India’s dependence on foreign textile imports.

पहली भारतीय कपास मिल, “द बॉम्बे स्पिनिंग मिल”, आज के दिन 1854 में बॉम्बे में कावसजी नानाभाई डावर द्वारा स्थापित की गई थी। इस मिल का गठन भारत के औद्योगिक इतिहास में एक महत्वपूर्ण मोड़ था। उस समय, भारत से कच्ची कपास इंग्लैंड भेजी जाती थी और वहीं से कपड़े आयात किए जाते थे, जिससे देश की अर्थव्यवस्था पर बोझ बढ़ रहा था। इसे बदलने के लिए नानाभाई डावर ने पहली भारतीय कपास मिल शुरू करने का समझदारी भरा निर्णय लिया।

इस मिल में शुरू में ₹5 लाख का निवेश किया गया था, जो उस समय एक बड़ी राशि थी। यह मिल भाप से चलती थी, जिससे उत्पादन और कार्यक्षमता में वृद्धि हुई। इससे पहले 1818 में कोलकाता के पास फोर्ट ग्लोस्टर में एक कपास कपड़ा मिल लगाने का प्रयास किया गया था, लेकिन वह सफल नहीं हो सका था।

द बॉम्बे स्पिनिंग मिल की सफलता ने भारत में कपास उद्योग के विकास का रास्ता खोला और अन्य उद्यमियों को प्रेरित किया। इसने न केवल कई लोगों के लिए रोजगार के अवसर पैदा किए बल्कि भारत की विदेशी कपड़ा आयात पर निर्भरता भी कम की।

आज, भारतीय वस्त्र उद्योग दुनिया में सबसे बड़े उद्योगों में से एक है, जो देश की जीडीपी में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान देता है और लाखों लोगों को रोजगार प्रदान करता है। द बॉम्बे स्पिनिंग मिल की स्थापना ने इस सफल उद्योग की नींव रखी। 1854 में इस मिल की स्थापना भारत के औद्योगिक इतिहास में एक मील का पत्थर थी, जिसने न केवल इंग्लैंड के साथ व्यापार असंतुलन को संबोधित किया बल्कि देश में कपड़ा उद्योग को भी क्रांतिकारी रूप से बदल दिया।
