25 Jan : Who were the first to communicate on phone miles away?

Anyone you want to speak to is just a call away. But making these calls was not so easy. Specially the transcontinental call.

We credit invention of telephone to Alexander Graham Bell. He invented the telephone in 1876, but it was only after almost 39 years that he could make the first transcontinental call. It was 25 January 1915, that first successful transcontinental call could be made.

Alexander Graham Bell, in New York City, repeated his famous statement

“Mr. Watson, come here. I want you,”

into the telephone, which was heard by his assistant Dr. Watson in San Francisco, for a long distance call of 3,400 miles. Dr. Watson replied,

“It will take me five days to get there now!”

Earlier trials in the field of telephone : 
1. The original long distance telephone network started in 1885, in New York City.
2. The president of AT&T, Theodore Vail, committed the company to a transcontinental line in 1909.
3. On June 27, 1914, with final pole at Urtah, 4,750 miles of telephone line, was raised.
4. Theodore Vail succeeded in transmitting his voice across the continental U.S. in July 1914.
5. Six months later, on January 25, 1915, first transcontinental call was made.
