First Indian Feature film “Raja Harishchandra” was released today in in 1913. This marked the beginning of the Indian Film Industry. Thanks to Legendary Dada Saheb Phalke, the visionary who thought of making a feature film in a time when it was not so easy, Don’t believe me, look at the video.

The film was based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Although a silent film with intertitles in Marathi, English and Hindi, its cast and staff were Marathi people and it is therefore also regarded as the first Marathi film.
Due to budget constraints, Phalke had to improvise a lot during the making of the film. For example, he used his own daughter as the actress for the female roles. The film was a silent black and white movie, running for about 40 minutes. The film was initially met with skepticism and doubt, with many people not believing that an Indian could successfully make a feature film. However, it went on to become a massive success and paved the way for the Indian film industry.
Despite facing many challenges during production, Phalke’s dedication and perseverance led to the creation of a historic masterpiece that laid the foundation for Indian cinema. “Raja Harishchandra” was followed by several other successful films made by Dadasaheb Phalke, solidifying his position as the father of Indian cinema.
