19 April : Most honourable day for India in Space

India’s first ever satellite Aryabhatt, made us proud. With this India entered the space age today in 1975. But Why it is called Aryabhatt ?

Time machine travels to space today along with India’s first ever satellite – the Aryabhatta. With this India entered the space age today in 1975.

It was not so easy, as there was no one well aware of satellite launching. Therefore, the 26-sided polyhedron, Aryabhatta, although built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was launched by the Soviet Union.

Indira Gandhi chose to name the satellite Aryabhata, after the 5th century astronomer and mathematician – Aryabhatta.

After the launch, a power failure halted experiments onboard the Aryabhata after four days and 60 orbits with all signals from the spacecraft lost after five days of operation.

The Aryabhata satellite re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on 11 February 1992, 17 years after its launch.

Do you remember the Aryabhatta’s image appeared on the reverse of Indian 2 rupee notes between 1976 and 1997.

The Aryabhata was a 26-sided polyhedron 1.4 metres (4.6 ft) in diameter. All faces (except the top and bottom) were covered with solar cells.

The 360 kg Aryabhata satellite project was initially pegged at Rs. 3 crore but cost a little more, as furniture and other things had to be bought.

A toilet in Bangalore was converted into a data receiving centre for India’s first satellite – Aryabhatta.

More Facts :

The primary mission of Aryabhatta was to conduct scientific experiments in X-ray astronomy, solar physics, and aeronomy.

The satellite helped India gain valuable experience in building and operating satellites.

Aryabhatta weighed 360 kg and was placed into a low Earth orbit.

The satellite operated for just over four years before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere on February 11, 1992.

Aryabhatta played a significant role in establishing India as a credible player in the field of space exploration.

The success of Aryabhatta paved the way for India to develop its own indigenous space program, leading to the launch of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969.

Aryabhatta was instrumental in helping India acquire advanced technologies and expertise in satellite manufacturing and operations.

The legacy of Aryabhatta lives on as India continues to make significant advancements in space exploration and satellite technology.
