Time machine travels to space today along with India’s first ever satellite – the Aryabhatta. With this India entered the space age today in 1975.
It was not so easy, as there was no one well aware of satellite launching. Therefore, the 26-sided polyhedron, Aryabhatta, although built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was launched by the Soviet Union.
Indira Gandhi chose to name the satellite Aryabhata, after the 5th century astronomer and mathematician – Aryabhatta.
After the launch, a power failure halted experiments onboard the Aryabhata after four days and 60 orbits with all signals from the spacecraft lost after five days of operation.
The Aryabhata satellite re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on 11 February 1992, 17 years after its launch.
Do you remember the Aryabhatta’s image appeared on the reverse of Indian 2 rupee notes between 1976 and 1997.
The Aryabhata was a 26-sided polyhedron 1.4 metres (4.6 ft) in diameter. All faces (except the top and bottom) were covered with solar cells.
The 360 kg Aryabhata satellite project was initially pegged at Rs. 3 crore but cost a little more, as furniture and other things had to be bought.
A toilet in Bangalore was converted into a data receiving centre for India’s first satellite – Aryabhatta.

भारत… और उसकी उपलब्धियों की लिस्ट में आज का दिन अमह है क्योंकि आज भारत ने पहली बार अंतरिक्ष में कदम रखा था… भारत का पहला उपग्रह आर्यभट्ट, जिसे ये नाम पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने भारतीय खगोलशास्त्री आर्यभट्ट के नाम पर दिया था… आज के दिन आर्यभट्ट को लॉन्च किया गया था… 1975 में आर्यभट्ट को बनाया भारत ने था लेकिन इसे लॉन्च किया था सोवियत यूनिन ने… लॉन्च के बाद आर्यभट्ट में कुछ दिक्कतें आ गईं थीं… जिसकी वजह से सारे सिग्नल डाउन हो गए थे… फिर भी आर्यभट्ट 17 सालों तक अपने मिशन पर रहा और 11 फरवरी 1992 को धरती की कक्षा में लौटा… बैंगलुरु में एक टॉयलेट को भारत के पहले उपग्रह आर्यभट्ट के लिए डेटा प्राप्त करने वाले केंद्र में बदल दिया गया था… 360 किलोग्राम के आर्यभट्ट उपग्रह परियोजना के लिए 3 करोड़ रुपये की लागत तय की गई थी, लेकिन बाद में ज़रूरत के हिसाब से लागत बढ़ती गई… पर आज इस उपलब्धि को याद करते हुए ये कहना पड़ेगा कि जो भी मेहनत हुई, जो भी खर्चा हुआ या जो भी प्रयास किए गए… सब बिल्कुल सही थे…
