Today in 2005, a new roller coaster opened at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey that would break multiple records and set a new standard for thrill-seekers. The Kingda Ka, named after the Bengal tiger, stood 456 feet tall and traveled at speeds up to 128 miles per hour.
The coaster was designed by Swiss manufacturers Intamin and was the successor to their previous record-breaking coaster, Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Ohio. Kingda Ka used a hydraulic launch system to propel riders forward, launching them from 0 to 128 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds. Riders would then ascend the 456-foot tall tower, reaching the top in just 28 seconds before plummeting straight back down at a 90-degree angle.
Kingda Ka’s speed and height were not the only records it set, however. It also became the first coaster to exceed 400 feet in height, the first to use a hydraulic launch system, and the first to feature a completely vertical drop. The ride was also notable for its unique layout, which featured a large hill after the initial drop and multiple airtime hills throughout the ride.
