3 May : The beginning of Indian Cinema

First Indian Feature film “Raja Harishchandra” was released today in in 1913. This marked the beginning of the Indian Film Industry. Thanks to Legendary Dada Saheb Phalke, the visionary who thought of making a feature film in a time when it was not so easy, Don’t believe me, look at the video.

The film could say everything without uttering a single dialogue. Just a few background score and acting calibre of then stars.

The film was based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Although a silent film with intertitles in Marathi, English and Hindi, its cast and staff were Marathi people and it is therefore also regarded as the first Marathi film.

पहली बार एक ही बार होता है और ये अनुभव बहुत खास होता है… भारतीय सिनेमा को ये ‘पहली बात’ महान फिल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक दादा साहेब फाल्के ने दिया था… आज ही भारतीय सिनेमा की पहली फीचर फिल्म ‘राजा हरीशचन्द्र’ रिलीज़ हुई थी… 1913 का आज का दिन सिनेमा के इतिहास में स्वर्णिम अक्षरों में लिखा गया है… और हर साल इस दिन को याद करके हम महान दादा साहेब फाल्के को धन्यवाद देते हैं… फिल्म में कोई डायलॉग नहीं है, सिर्फ एक दो जगह पर संगीत के टुकड़े हैं… लेकिन एक्टिंग कमाल की… फिल्म में डायलॉग नहीं थे, लेकिन अपनी बात समझाने के लिए कई जगह अंग्रेजी, हिन्दी और मराठी में  intertitles ज़रूर डाले गए थे… उस दौर की इस फिल्म में ज़्यादातर कलाकार मराठी थी, इसलिए इसे पहली मराठी फिल्म भी माना जाता है… जैसा कि नाम से ही ज़ाहिर है, ये फिल्म राजा हरीशचन्द्र के बारे में है…
