Satyajit Ray, a man who never aimed for awards but got lots and lots of them. Born today in 1921, he has directed 36 films including feature films, documentaries and short films. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic. His first film ‘Pather Panchali’ won 11 international awards. This film, along with Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material.
He used to draw his screenplay rather than writing them in words.
He was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University. He was also bestowed with honorary Oscar award after his death.

मशहूर फिल्मकार सत्यजीत रे का आज 1921 में जन्म हुआ था। सत्यजीत रे ने 36 फिल्मों का निर्देशन किया था और कई उपन्यास भी लिखे थे। अपने करियर की शुरुआत एक चित्रकार के तौर पर करने वाले सत्यजीत रे, music composer और film critic भी थे। उनकी पहली फ़िल्म पाथेर पांचाली थी, जिसे 11 अन्तरराष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार मिले थे। सत्यजीत रे ने बांग्ला भाषा के बाल-साहित्य में गुप्तचर फेलुदा और वैज्ञानिक प्रोफ़ेसर शंकु नाम के दो लोकप्रिय चरित्रों की रचना भी की थी । Oxford University ने सत्यजीत रे को honorary doctorate की उपाधि दी थी, यहां खास बात ये है कि सत्यजीत रे, चार्ली चैपलिन के बाद इस सम्मान को पाने वाले पहले फ़िल्म निर्देशक थे। 1992 में सत्यजीत रे को भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया गया । 1992 में ही उन्हें Lifetime Achievement के लिए Honorary Oscar पुरस्कार भी मिला था, हालांकि खराब सेहत की वजह से सत्यजीत रे खुद इस समारोह में शामिल नहीं हो पाए थे, ऐसे में उन्होंने वीडियो संदेश के ज़रिए अस्पताल में ही ये पुरस्कार ग्रहण किया था। आपको जानकर हैरानी होगी कि सत्यजीत रे..अपनी फिल्मों के सीन DRAW भी करते थे।
