27 Apr : The story of a ‘mouse’

A mouse on the side of your computer help you ease the way you work. But, evolution with time has changed it drastically. It is being replaced fast and steady.

Using your personal computer was not so easy before today in 1981. You got your first and most innovative accessory for computers – the mouse. The name “mouse” derived from the device’s rounded shape and tail-like cord extending from it, just like a rodent.

The modern mouse is available in a number of variations, even without a long tail, i.e. bluetooth enabled.

Invented in 1964, the mouse got fame only in 1981. Credit for the invention itself goes to Douglas Engelbart. Other methods of direction were being tried at the time — a head-mounted device, for example — before Englebart’s hand-operated mouse won out. Englebart’s original design underwent a number of changes before emerging as part of the Star workstation, a commercial system which was notable for a few other firsts as well: the graphical user interface, and the use of folders, file servers and e-mail.’

Inspite of all this, mouse remained in relative obscurity until the Apple Lisa, but more prominently the Apple Macintosh, brought the mouse into the mainstream.

Steve jobs explained an industrial designer how to build a better mouse :
“[The Xerox mouse] is a mouse that cost three hundred dollars to build and it breaks within two weeks. Here’s your design spec: Our mouse needs to be manufacturable for less than fifteen bucks. It needs to not fail for a couple of years, and I want to be able to use it on Formica and my bluejeans.”

Whatsoever, mouse is becoming history slowly. It is replaced by trackpad in almost all devices available today.
