3 Apr : First ever call made from a mobile phone

There must be someone who thought of mobile phones for the first time and made the very first call from mobile. It was a phone which used to take 10 hours for charging and talkative was just 35 minutes.

Until 47 years ago, calling while walking or moving was just impossible. Thanks to engineer Martin cooper who made it possible. He made the first mobile phone call 45 years ago today while he stood in midtown Manhattan and placed a call to the headquarters of Bell Labs in New Jersey.

The substance of the call is lost to history. Cooper’s inaugural mobile conversation is remembered as – “I’m ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end,’ or something to that effect.”

The phone at that time, was nine inches tall, contained 30 circuit boards, had a talk-time of 35 minutes and took 10 hours to recharge, completely opposite of the mobile phones we have today.

Jokingly or logically, those phones were called ‘brick’ phones. From ‘bricks’ to ‘clicks’ these days, mobile phones have travelled a long way. They are being used to take photos, play music and games, send emails, download maps, watch video clips, all as well as talking and texting. Smaller, lighter, advance and smart – mobile phones have given meaning to our lives and made us almost dependent on them.
