It is one of my favourite destinations. It is one of the best creations of man. It is the Eiffel Tower. Over the years, this huge structure has gained popularity and respect because of its erect existence is more than a century old. It was actually inaugurated today for the 1889 World Fair in Paris. From then till today, it astonishes the world with its glory.
The Eiffel Tower was built in commemoration of the French Revolution. It was the tallest building in the world when it was unveiled. Although there are more structures built in the modern world to compete with the iconic Eiffel Tower.
It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower.
It is now the most visited paid monument in the world and around seven million people climb its stairs or take the lift to one of its three levels each year.
Those who have visited France, must have got the opportunity to visit the Eiffel Tower. But others who could not make it, must know certain things about it.
Whenever you visit Eiffel Tower, you need to climb nothing less than 1,710 steps to reach the top. Counting from the ground to the first floor, there are 347 steps, and the second level comes after 674 steps.
As the structure says it all, it was not at all an easy task to make such a figure. Gustave actually had to work hard for the design, and off course the people who made the engineered structure reality, had to work hard and fast at the same time. It took only two years, two months and five days to build the Eiffel Tower. After making the Eiffel Tower, I am sure even the makers could not believe what they have created.
Today, if you want to lift the 1,063 feet tall Eiffel Tower or shift it from France to some other place, you have to lift nothing less that 10,000 tonnes. This is the approximate weight of the Iron Lady.
Most surprising fact is that the tower expands in the hot sun by six inches and shrinks in the cold. Although you can visit the Eiffel Tower in any season, because you can’t make out the change in size and shape with the naked eye.
Last but not the least, you must be wondering how much it would have cost in 1800s to construct the Eiffel Tower. Well, it cost 7,799,401.31 French gold francs of 1889 i.e ₹8,91,87,838.75 today.

वो दुनिया के सात अजूबों में शुमार भले ही न हो, लेकिन किसी अजूबे से कम नहीं है। न जाने कितनी बार उसे तस्वीरों में देखकर मैंने सोचा है कि ऐसा ढांचा किसने और क्यों बनाया होगा। थोड़ी रिसर्च के बाद पता चला कि फ्रांसीसी इंजीनियर गुस्ताव एफिल ने इस टॉवर का ढांचा डिज़ाइन किया। सोचिए, उनके मन में आखिर क्या चल रहा होगा जब उन्होंने उस समय का दुनिया का सबसे ऊंचा ढांचा तैयार करने का सोचा होगा। दरअसल, 1889 में पेरिस में वर्ल्ड फेयर का आयोजन हुआ था, उसी दिन एफिल टावर को भी दुनिया के सामने पेश किया गया। दुनिया बस इसे देखती ही रह गई… और आज तक देख रही है।
कितना अजीब संयोग है कि आप कुछ सोचे, और वो पूरा हो जाए। इस टावर का डिज़ाइन बनाते हुए गुस्ताव को इस बात पर पूरा यकीन होगा कि ये ढांचा बन जाएगा। हज़ारों हाथों की मदद से दो साल, दो महीने, पांच दिन के लंबे अरसे के बाद आखिरकार ऐसा हो पाया। 1,063 फीट ऊंचे इस टावर का वज़न तकरीबन 10,000 टन है। इस टावर के टॉप पर पहुंचना चाहते हैं तो ज़मीन से आपको 1,710 सीढ़ियां चढ़नी पडेंगी। पहली मंज़िल ज़मीन से 374 सीढ़ियां ऊपर है और दूसरी मंजिल 674 सीढ़ियां चढ़कर पहुंच सकते हैं।
दिखने में बेहद खूबसूरत इस टावर को बनाने में उस समय करीब ₹8,91,87,838.75 (आठ करोड़ इक्यानवे लाख सत्तासी हज़ार आठ सौ अड़तीस रुपये) लगे थे। एक ढ़ांचा जो वर्ल्ड फेयर का हिस्सा बनाने के लिए तैयार किया गया था, वो एक सौ उनत्तीस सालों से सिर उठाए खड़ा है और दुनिया के लिए एक मिसाल है।
