30 March : Your pencil with eraser is 165 years old

All of you must have used this kind of pencil. But today you would know that this style was found in 1858. In fact, it was patented by stationer Hymen Lipman of Philadelphia today in 1858.

Nearly 60 years after Lipman’s innovation, the rubber-tipped pencil became a hit.

An interesting feature of this design was that the eraser was actually installed within the wood of the pencil opposite from the writing core end. In this manner, the pencil could be sharpened on both ends to refresh either the graphite core or eraser.

In 1862, Lipman sold his patent to Joseph Reckendorfer for $100,000, who went to sue the pencil manufacturer Faber for infringement.
In 1875 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against Reckendorfer declaring the patent invalid because his invention was actually a combination of two already known things with no new use.

बचपन में पेंसिल से लिखते-लिखते रबर खो जाए तो कितना गुस्सा आता था न… फिर मम्मी हमें लाकर देती थी रबर वाली पेंसिल, ऐसी पेंसिल जिसके पीछे रबर लगी होती थी। और बस सब कुछ ठीक हो जाता था। ऐसे में उस इंसान को धन्यवाद करने का मन करता है जिसने इस समस्या के बारे में इतनी बारीकी से सोचा और समझा। इतना ही नहीं, उसने इसका समाधान भी निकाल दिया। ये तरीका 1858 में ही इजात कर लिया गया था। और ऐसा करने वाले थे हाइमन लिपमैन… जो कि लिखने-पढ़ने का सामान बेचते थे… यानी स्टेशनर थे। 162 साल पहले रबर वाली पेंसिल दुनिया में आ चुकी थी… लेकिन आज भी इस पेंसिल का सुख अलग ही अनुभव देता है।
