16 March : Space travel was a dream before today in 1926
Travelling in space fascinates everyone. So it did to the man who was finally called the Father of Modern Rocketry. He first thought of making something that can help man reach space and he did make it.
The man who is considered as the father of modern rocketry. Thanks to his efforts that spaceflight is made possible. He is credited with creating and building the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket. Today in 1926, Robert Hutchings Goddard successfully launched his model by performing the first flight test of a liquid-fuel rocket in Auburn, Massachusetts.
From Goddard’s diary :
Went to Auburn with Sachs in am. Esther and Mr. Roope came out at 1 p.m. Tried rocket at 2.30. It rose 41 feet & went 184 feet, in 2.5 secs., after the lower half of the nozzle burned off. Brought materials to lab.
Even though the release was pulled, the rocket did not rise at first, but the flame came out, and there was a steady roar. After a number of seconds it rose, slowly until it cleared the frame, and then at express train speed, curving over to the left, and striking the ice and snow, still going at a rapid rate.
Unfortunately, the camera Goddard was using to film the first flight ran out of film before the rocket managed to leave the ground, so there is no video of the event.

स्पेस में जाने का सपना इंसान न जाने कब से देख रहा होगा। लेकिन इसे सच करने की कोशिश रॉबर्ड गोदार्ड ने की थी। उन्होंने आज ही के दिन पहली बार liquid-fuel rocket ने सफल उड़ान भरी थी। इसे स्पेस में इंसान के पहुंचने की पहली सीढ़ी माना जा सकता है। रॉबर्ट ने 1926 से लेकर 1941 तक करीब 34 रॉकेट लॉन्च किए थे। उस समय उनकी इस कोशिश और उनकी इन उपलब्धियों को किसी ने नहीं समझा। बल्कि लोग उन पर हंसते थे। जब उन्होंने देखा कि लोगों को उनका काम समझ नहीं आ रहा है तो फिर रॉबर्ट ने खुद को काम में ही सीमित कर लिया और लोगों के साथ इसकी जानकारी साझा करना भी बंद कर दिया। आखिरकार उनकी मौत के काफी सालों बाद जब स्पेस में जाने को लेकर नए आविष्कार और कोशिशें होने लगीं तो लोगों को रॉबर्ट गोदार्ड का किया हुआ काम समझ आया। आखिरकार उन्हें Father of modern rocketry कहा जाने लगा।
