A day in history that marked birth of legends in various fields. 

Charles Darwin – The man behind the idea that humans shared a common ancestor with apes. It is believed today but at that time Darwin had to struggle hard with his own ideas. He kept mum for 20 years before bringing the concept of human evolution in front of the world in the form of a book “On the origin of Species” at the age of 50. This day is dedicated to Darwin, hence celebrated as Darwin day.
It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.

Abraham Lincoln – Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

Swami Dayanand Saraswati – One of the makers of Modern India, Swami Dayanand Saraswati was born today in 1824. He founded the Arya Samaj and was the first to give the call for ‘Swarajya’ as India for Indians. One of his most influential works is the book Satyarth Prakash, which contributed to the Indian independence movement.

आज कई महान हस्तियों का जन्मदिन है

दुनिया को Evolution Theory देने वाले चार्ल्स डार्विन का आज 1809 में जन्म हुआ था. चार्ल्स डार्विन ने ‘On the Origin of Species’ नामक किताब लिखी थी जिसे biological evolution की नींव माना जाता है. 1859 में चार्ल्स डार्विन ने जब दुनिया को ख़बर दी कि इंसान और बाक़ी जानवर बहुत दूर के रिश्तेदार हैं तो सनसनी फैल गई थी. चार्ल्स डार्विन की Biological Evolution Theory को Darwinism कहते हैं. विज्ञान की दुनिया में डारविन के योगदान के लिए ये दिन उन्हें समर्पित किया जाता है. अंतराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर इस दिन को Darwin Day के रुप में मनाया जाता है.

1809 में ही आज अमेरिका में दास प्रथा को खत्म करने वाले अब्राहम लिंकन का जन्म हुआ था. अब्राहम लिंकन अमेरिका के 16वें राष्ट्रपति थे. बिना किसी औपचारिक शिक्षा के अब्राहम लिंकन पहले एक वकील बने और फिर अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति बने. 1914 में Washington, D.C में बने Lincoln Memorial की नीव भी आज ही के दिन रखी गई थी.

1824 में आज आर्य समाज की शुरुआत करने वाले समाज-सुधारक स्वामी दयानन्द सरस्वती का जन्म हुआ था. वैदिक विचारधारा को नई पहचान देने वाले स्वामी दयानन्द सरस्वती ने ही भारत के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में जान भरने वाले ‘स्वराज’ यानी self-governance का नारा दिया था.
