7 Feb : Landlord’s game to Monopoly – the controversial journey

We play games, but we never think how it came into being. There is one game which has a controversial journey. This may be your favourite one. Click and read.

Monopoly, popularly known as business or Vyapar in India, was first published today in 1935. It was actually first marketed today, having been licensed in more than 103 countries and printed in more than thirty-seven languages today.

Charles Darrow is credited with the invention of monopoly, but it all started a few decades ago. The game can be traced back to 1903, when American anti-monopolist Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips, created a game through which she hoped to be able to explain the single tax theory.

It was intended as an educational tool to illustrate the negative aspects of concentrating land in private monopolies. Magie took out a patent in 1904. Her game, The Landlord’s Game, was self-published, beginning in 1906.

Apparently, this was this game that Charles Darrow first saw and played. He became infatuated with the game and developed his own version. His modifications included adding icons and graphics, the corner symbols and the color bands at the top of each property. Previously there were no pictures on the game board. These modifications gave the game more appeal and greatly increased its popularity.

It is now owned and produced by the American game and toy company Hasbro.
