On 31 Jan 1915, poisonous gases were used as weapon in World War I for the first time. Germany attacked Russia with 18,000 gas shells in the Battle of Bolimow. The attack proved unsuccessful or not that effective because of the cold weather, as instead of vaporizing, the chemical froze and failed to have the desired effect. Also the Gas – Xylyl bromide blew back to the Germans, leading to call off the attack.
The earliest military uses of chemicals were tear-inducing irritants. They were neither fatal nor disabling poisons. During the first World War, the French army was the first to employ gas, using 26 mm grenades filled with tear gas - ethyl bromoacetate in August 1914.

1915 में पहली बार वर्ल्ड वॉर के दौरान ज़हरीली गैसों का इस्तेमाल हुआ था. ये पहली बार था जब गैस का इस्तेमाल हथियार की तरह किया गया था. जर्मनी ने 31 जनवरी 1915 को 18,000 तोपों के ज़रिए रूस पर ज़हरीला हमला किया था. हालांकि गैस का उतना प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा और जर्मनी की कोशिश नाकाम रही. कम तापमान की वजह से गैस वाष्प बनने की जगह जम गई, और जर्मनी को अपना ज़हरीले गैस का हमला रोकना पड़ा.
