Beating Retreat – Every year on 29th of January, India celebrates the end of Republic day festivities with the performance of bands of the three wings of the military – the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. From 2016, bands of Central Armed Police Forces and the Delhi Police also participated. Fabulous lighting and melodious drum beats make this occasion a really special moment for the Country.

Two times Beating Retreat had to be cancelled since 1950 :
1. First time in 2001, after devastating earthquake in Bhuj, Gujarat.
2. Second time in 2007, when Former Indian President R Venkatraman died after prolonged illness.

But Do you know, Beating Retreat is not as new as celebrated since 1950s in India. It is a military ceremony dating to 16th century England and was first used to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle. Originally it was called ‘Watch Setting’ and was initiated at the sunset by the firing of a single round from the evening gun.
