On last day of year 1879, i.e. 31st December, world must be celebrating new year’s eve, but Thomas Alva Edison was preparing in his laboratory, to bring to the world, one of the most innovative invention of all time – Bulb.

Edison gave the first public demonstration of the incandescent light bulb today in 1879, at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. This could be made possible after years of work and thousands of experiments.
An incandescent light has a thread-like object, or filament, that gives off light when heated to incandescence (hot enough to emit light) by an electric current.

Edison is remembered for the invention, but he was not alone struggling to give light to the world in the easiest form. He was assisted by Francis Upton, a 26-year-old graduate of Princeton University who provided the mathematical and theoretical expertise that Edison lacked. In October 1879, they produced a bulb with a platinum filament. But platinum was too expensive, so instead they found that a carbon filament provided a good light at a cheaper price.

वैज्ञानिकों के सरताज कहे जाने वाले थॉमस एल्वा एडिसन ने आज दुनिया के सामने पहली बार बल्ब का प्रदर्शन किया था। इसे मानव इतिहास में सबसे बड़े आविष्कारों में गिना जाता है। बल्ब में एक पतला फिलामेन्ट (तार) होता है जिससे होकर जब धारा बहती है तब ये गरम होकर रौशनी लगता है। फिलामेन्ट को काँच के बल्ब के अन्दर इसलिये रखा जाता है ताकि बहुत ज़्यादा गर्म होने पर ये फिलामेन्ट वायुमण्डल में मौजूद आक्सीजन तक न पहुँच पाये। क्योंकि ऐसा होने से फिलामेन्ट कमजोर हो सकता है।
