24 Dec : Man entered the moon’s orbit

Landing on the surface of the moon is different from entering its orbit. 

It was today in 1958 that for the first time any human being had left the earth’s orbit and entered moon’s orbit. Apollo 8, the second human spaceflight mission in the United States Apollo space program, was the first manned spacecraft to leave earth’s orbit reach the Earth’s Moon, orbit it and return safely to Earth.

The three-astronaut crew — Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders — became the first to see Earth as a whole planet, the first to directly see the far side of the Moon, and then the first to witness Earth rise.

1968 में आज पहली बार चांद की Orbit यानी कक्षा में किसी इंसान की entry हुई थी। Apollo 8 अंतरिक्ष यान के ज़रिये अंतरिक्ष यात्रियों ने चांद के 10 चक्कर लगाए थे। ये पहला मौका था जब अंतरिक्ष यात्रियों ने चांद की सतह से धरती को पूरे ग्रह की तरह देखा था। इस ऐतिहासिक घटना का live प्रसारण हुआ था। इसे इतिहास में सबसे ज़्यादा देखे जाने वाले programs में से एक माना जाता है।
