Before today in 1944, babies who were born with ‘Blue Baby Syndrome’ either died or lived with the condition.
But today in 1944, almost 72 years ago, this disease found its cure. The first surgery to correct ‘Blue Baby Syndrome’ was performed by Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas. The procedure joined an artery leaving the heart to an artery leading to the lungs, in an attempt to give the blood a second chance at oxygenation. This operation came to be known as the Blalock-Taussig Shunt.
Blue baby syndrome is a disease in which kids body turn blue, specially the pupil of the eye. It is a congenital heart malformation that robs the blood of oxygen.
