After being number 1 in space missions, Soviet Union also completed the prototype of the AK47, one of the first assault rifles, much before America. It took the US ten years before it developed an assault rifle that matched the effectiveness of the AK-47. It was first put into use on this day in 1947 (hence the marking 47).
The rifle was designed by Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, back when he was only 27 years old. Interestingly, Kalashnikov is also a poet who published six books.
AK-47 was introduced into selective Soviet army units as early as 1948. In 1949, it became the official gun of the Soviet military and its allies.
It is estimated that there are around 100 million AK-47 rifles in circulation around the world today. Known today as a weapon of terrorists, they are actually appreciated for their simplicity and reliability.
