3 Nov : When dog travelled to space…

Dog is man’s best friend. Most of us agree on this. So was a dog named Laika. A Russian cosmonaut dog, who travelled to space today in 1957.

Laika became the first animal in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth.

Laika was a stray dog from the streets of Moscow. He was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched today into outer space.

The step was taken to ensure the impact of spaceflight in living creatures. At the time of Laika’s mission, the technology to de-orbit had not been developed. Thus, Laika’s survival was not expected. Laika died within hours from overheating.

A small monument in her honour was unveiled on April 11, 2008.
