It was today in 1886 that France gifted it to America on the centenary of America’s independence. It is the “Statue of Liberty”.
The message with this statue was “liberty enlightening the world’.
It was made in Paris by the French sculptor Bartholdi, in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the Eiffel Tower, was responsible for the steel framework. It stands high at the entrance to New York Harbour and has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United States ever since.
The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet.
Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons and Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches.
