25 Oct : The man who died fighting for apartheid

Today in 1962, it was the beginning of Nelson Mandela’s twenty-seven years in South African prisons. He was initially sentenced to five years imprisonment for inciting African workers to strike and for leaving the country without valid travel documents. In less than a year, even more serious charges we imposed on him under the Sabotage Act. This could have resulted in death sentence.

While facing the possibility of a death sentence, Mandela said:
During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society… It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if need be it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

He lived in prison for 27 years, but the leadership that he gave his people, in the courtroom, in prison and after his release, will last for the ages.

Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
