20 Aug : A day for mosquitoes !!!

A day observed for mosquitoes… sounds weird but it exists. Today is World Mosquito Day… It is observed annually on 20 August since 1897… On this day a British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovered that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans… Shortly after this discovery the day came to be known as World Mosquito Day… The event raises awareness about the threat of malaria and other diseases transmitted by the World’s deadliest animal… This is a way to remember that Mosquito’s cause more deaths and  diseases than any other animal on the planet… Some of them are Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Zika, etc… Sir Ronald Ross was also awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902 for his contribution to medical science… 

Some interesting facts : 

• Only female mosquitoes bite. Both male and female feed mainly on fruit and plant nectar, but the female also needs the protein in blood to help her eggs develop. 
• Ever wondered why you are able to kill mosquitoes ? Actually they are quite slow fliers. These biting insects can only fly at speeds between 1 and 1.5 mph so you can’t expect them to be breaking Usain Bolt’s 100m world record anytime soon. 
• According to the American Mosquito Control Association, there are over 3,000 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world. 
• Studies have revealed that mosquitoes are able to drink 3 times more blood than their own body weight. 
• Mosquitoes live more than two months. 
• Mosquitoes not only bite humans, they even bite animals.

आज World Mosquito Day है… यानी मच्छरों के लिए एक दिन …  सुनने में अजीब लगता है लेकिन ये सच है… आज विश्व मच्छर दिवस है … ये दिन 1897 से अब तक हर वर्ष मनाया जाता है… इस दिन एक ब्रिटिश चिकित्सक सर रोनाल्ड रॉस ने पाया कि मादा मच्छर मनुष्यों के बीच मलेरिया का संचार करती है… इस खोज के कुछ ही समय बाद आज का दिन विश्व मच्छर दिवस के रूप में जाना जाने लगा … इस तरह दुनिया के सबसे घातक जानवर द्वारा प्रसारित मलेरिया और अन्य बीमारियों के खतरे के बारे में जागरूकता बढ़ती है… ये याद रखने का एक तरीका है कि ग्रह पर किसी अन्य जानवर की तुलना में मच्छर ही अधिक मौतों और बीमारियां के लिए ज़िम्मेदार हैं… उनमें से कुछ मलेरिया, डेंगू, चिकनगुनिया, पीला बुखार, जापानी इंसेफेलाइटिस, ज़ीका, आदि होता है… Sir Ronald Ross को चिकित्सा विज्ञान में अपने योगदान के लिए वर्ष 1902 में Nobel पुरस्कार से भी सम्मानित किया गया था… 

कुछ रोचक बातें :

• केवल मादा मच्छर ही काटती है। वो आपका खून पीकर ही ज़िंदा रहती हैं। खून में मौजूद प्रोटीन और अन्य तत्व, मच्छरों के लिए दावत की तरह होते हैं जो उन्हें अपने अंडे बनाने और उन्हें विकसित करने में मदद करने के लिए ज़रूरी होते हैं। 
• कभी आपने सोचा है कि आप मच्छरों को मारने में सक्षम क्यों हैं? वास्तव में मच्छर काफी धीमी गति से उड़ते हैं। ये काटने वाले कीड़े केवल 1 से 1.5 मील प्रति घंटे की गति से उड़ सकते हैं, इसलिए आप उनसे जल्द ही उसेन बोल्ट के 100 मीटर विश्व रिकॉर्ड को तोड़ने की उम्मीद नहीं कर सकते हैं।
• अमेरिकी मच्छर नियंत्रण संघ के अनुसार, दुनिया भर में मच्छरों की 3,000 से अधिक विभिन्न प्रजातियां हैं।
• अध्ययनों से पता चला है कि मच्छर अपने शरीर के वजन से 3 गुना अधिक रक्त पीने में सक्षम हैं।
• मच्छर दो महीने से ज्यादा नहीं जीते हैं।
• मच्छर न केवल मनुष्यों को काटते हैं, बल्कि जानवरों को भी काटते हैं।
