Ever tried to decode your car number plate ? What does it say ?
Today is the right day to do so. It was today in 1893, when France introduced the registration plate for the vehicles.
What does this mean ? It simply means – registration of a motor vehicle with a government authority, either compulsory or otherwise. The purpose of motor vehicle registration is to establish a link between a vehicle and an owner or user of the vehicle. This link might be used for taxation or crime detection purposes.
France was followed by Germany in 1896 in introducing registration plates. The Netherlands was the first country to introduce a national registration plate, called a “driving permit”, in 1898. Initially these plates were just sequentially numbered, starting at 1, but this was changed in 1906.
In the U.S., where each state issues plates, New York state has required plates since 1903. They were black numerals on a white background. Earlier in 1901 only the owner’s initials were clearly visible on the back of the vehicle.
UK plates were first required from 1 January 1904 by the Motor Car Act 1903.
For India, Vehicle registration plates, usually known as number plates, are issued by the Regional Transport Office of each district. Most motor vehicles which are used on public roads are required to display them by law. The new system which is followed currently in all the states and cities came into effect in the early 1990s. Now comes the trick of decoding your number plate.
- First two letters are for the identification of the state in which the vehicle is registered.
- Next two number code is to identify the Regional Transport Office where the vehicle is registered.
- An alphabet code is to define the series. This is one or two Alphabet, depending on vehicle density of the district/RTO.
- And a four digit serial.
For example
DL stands for Delhi
MH stands for Maharastra
UK stands for Uttarakhand and so on…
The Delhi NCR however uses a modified system wherein an additional alphabet is inserted after the RTO code to classify vehicle type. ‘C’ in your number plate stands for Car, ‘S’ stands for scooter or motorcycle, ‘R’ stands for three wheeler, ‘F’ stands for “Fancy” or VIP numbers irrespective of vehicle type and ‘P’ for Public transport vehicles.
So, now you can decode your vehicle number and keep decoding the vehicle numbers you see on the road.

मोटर कार अधिनियम 1903 द्वारा पहली बार 1 जनवरी 1904 से यूके में नंबर प्लेट की परंपरा शुरू हुई थी।
भारत में, वाहन पंजीकरण प्लेट, जिसे आमतौर पर नंबर प्लेट कहा जाता है, वो हर जिले के क्षेत्रीय परिवहन कार्यालय द्वारा जारी की जाती है। सड़क पर चलने वाले हर वाहन को इसे लगाना क़ानूनी रूप से ज़रूरी है। नई प्रणाली जो वर्तमान में सभी राज्यों और शहरों में मानी जाती है, उसकी शुरुआत 1990 के दशक हुई थी। अब आपको बताते हैं आपकी नंबर प्लेट को डिकोड करने की ट्रिक –
– पहले दो अक्षर उस राज्य की पहचान के लिए हैं जिसमें वाहन पंजीकृत है।
– अगले दो नंबर कोड क्षेत्रीय परिवहन कार्यालय की पहचान करना है जहां वाहन पंजीकृत है।
– श्रृंखला को परिभाषित करने के लिए एक वर्णमाला कोड है। यह जिला / आरटीओ के वाहन घनत्व के आधार पर एक या दो वर्णमाला है।
- और आख़िर में चार अंकों का सीरियल।

दिल्ली एनसीआर में नंबर प्लेट पर एक alphabet और होता है… जैसे आपकी नंबर प्लेट में अगर ‘C’ लिखा है तो वो कार के लिए है, ‘S’ स्कूटर या मोटरसाइकिल के लिए है, ‘R’ तीन पहिया वाहन के लिए है, ‘F’ “फैंसी” या वीआईपी संख्या के लिए है और सार्वजनिक परिवहन के लिए ‘P’ है।
तो, अब आप अपना वाहन नंबर आसानी से डिकोड कर सकते हैं।
