We all breathe Oxygen but don’t know how it came into existence. It was not that easy to identify what gas is responsible for life ?
Today in 1774, British scientist Joseph Priestley solved the puzzle.
He used a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays on a sample of mercury oxide (HgO) to discover that heating this compound produced a gas, oxygen (O2). In this environment a mouse could live four times longer than normal. Theories based on Priestley’s work underpin modern chemistry.
Equipment used by Priestley in his experiments on gases
Although Priestley is often credited with discovering this new type of “air”, German-Swede Wilhelm Scheele made a similar discovery in 1771, although Priestley beat him to publishing. Frenchman Antoine Lavoisier recognized that the new “air” was actually a new element, and he named it in 1777.
The laboratory at Lord Shelburne’s estate, Bowood House, in which Priestley discovered oxygen
Primary source of oxygen for human beings are trees, but with time number of trees have declined. Trees are being cut to support population but no trees are being planted. Half of the country faces flood and other half faces drought. The balance in the ecosystem is diminishing. Plant tress so that you can breathe and live a healthy life.
