Did you remember when you made your first ever mobile phone call ?
The first cell phone call in India was made between Kolkata and Delhi.
Then West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu called then communications minister Sukhram in the P V Narasimha Rao government. The call was made today in 1995 between Writer’s building in kolkata and Sanchar Bhawan in Delhi via the network of Mobile Net.
The call was made in India, on a Nokia 2110 mobile, that weighed half a pound, on a Nokia-supplied network. Nokia today has lost its charm as it could not upgrade itself with the changing times.
With handsets priced at Rs 25,000-45,000 and call charges at Rs 16 a minute for the caller and Rs 8 for the called (Rs 24 a minute in total), the mobile phone was meant only for the rich. Today, call charges have dropped down to 50 paise per minute and up to 20 mobile handsets can be bought for Rs 45,000. That too smaller and smarter than the earlier ones. A combo of phone, camera, music player, personal computer, and soon to be payment machines (just by swiping your phone you can make payments).
