7 June : Happy “Cricket World Cup” Day

It all began today in 1975 i.e. 45 years ago. The day came almost after four years when one day International cricket match was played. It was played in England and were used to be called as Prudential cup coz of the sponsors.

The matches then, consisted of 60 overs of six-balls per team.
The first three events i.e 1975, 1979 and 1983 were held in England. Last one amongst these was won by India.


After 1983 World Cup, the tournament moved out of England. It was shared between countries who are also the members hosting at least one match in the tournament.

In 2011 when India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh hosted the World Cup. India won the tournament, defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final in Mumbai, thus becoming the first country to win the Cricket World Cup final on home soil.
5 time winner Australia (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015) leads the list of winners, with 2 times winner India (1983 and 2011) and 2 times winner West Indies (the first two tournaments i.e. 1975 and 1979). One time winners are Pakistan (1992) and Sri Lanka (1996).
